Gender Income Gap - The Truth Behind the Stat

I have been fairly fired up since the State of the Union address by our President. He has consistently tried to misguide the American public about the gender wage gap. I believe he, as well as other Liberals, does this so they can try to advance the argument that there is a war against women. So I dug to see how this stat came about and how it is calculated. The sources I am using are left leaning sites so as to remove the argument most leftists use: (PolitiFact | Barack Obama ad says women are paid "77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men") and (Obama's 77-Cent Exaggeration - FactCheck.org)

So what is the truth? Is there a wage gap between men and women? The answer is yes. Is that wage gap from discrimination when a woman is doing the same exact job as a man for the same amount of hours with the same tenure? The answer is categorically NO!

How 77 cents on a dollar came about was basically taking the total wages of women's pay divided by the total number of women working. Compare that to the same calculation for men and you arrive at the gap.

So why is there a gap? Simple, in general men and women do not hold the same jobs. In addition, men usually don't have a break in their career paths like women do when they have children. This affects the length of service, tenure, and compensation. In addition, the stat does not take into account total compensation, but only wages. So you can see that if a woman does NOT hold the same type of job, have the same tenure, and work the same hours then naturally the odds are women will make less money. So for any person to say that the wage gap is otherwise is trying to mislead you.

This is just one of many examples of why you need to look behind what the politicians are trying to feed you. They take a stat and spin it for their own agenda. In the end, all it does is divide us from being united and working towards real solutions to REAL problems. It is a shame our President and his liberal friends put forth information that is untrue for their own gain at the expense of women.
